Hello Divas
Now… I am not a believer in beauty myths. I believe woman of color can wear whatever color she wants. I mean honestly, if you are a woman of color wear what you want, whatever bright color your choose, rock it out with a highlight or contour shade that tones it down a bit and go for it. If you choose not to tone it down go for it… it is you and wear what you want. The only beauty myth I subscribe to is the Foundation rule. Which is … If you choose to wear a foundation you must choose the shade that most closely matches your skin tone. For all of you woman that have this issue to deal with I feel your pain. So I thought I would dedicate this post to offering my assistance to this dilemma. The biggest beauty blunder that I most commonly see among women of color is their foundation’s looking ashy or gray, which is an immediate giveaway that we have chosen the wrong color. Notice I said we… I have included myself in this category because before I knew what to look for I was also guilty of choosing the wrong color…
By no means am I the foundation god or police, I just have learned some things through trial and error and wanted to share… so ladies check out my list of suggestions for choosing the right foundation.
STEPS FOR CHOOSING FOUNDATION
1. Check to see if the product has little or no titanium, (commonly found in sunscreen) this product will settle on your skin, reflect light and further cause you to look dull or ashy. If you must use a product with a sunscreen agent, try to keep it in your moisturizer.
2. Determine the color of your skin’s undertone. It is red? Yellow? This is not always easy to do. If you are like me you will find that your skins undertone can change depending on the season. Some people will find that they are a red in the warmer months and a yellow in the colder months.
3. You want to choose three foundation shades that are similar to your coloring. Next swab them on your clean moisturized face, along the jaw line. (remember liquid foundations look darker in the bottle). Then if necessary go outside, walk the mall, go home. There is nothing that says you can’t try out a product, return later to purchase. The one that disappears into your skin is the clear winner. Now if you are searching for drugstore brands the testing stage may not be available to you. That being said, Bobbi Brown, Make-up Forever and Iman (all can be found at Sephora) are great places to start. An added bonus: All of these brands offer a variety of coverage’s, so you can also pick from sheer to matte to tinted moisturizer (yes we women of color can wear tinted moisturizers).
4. When purchasing a foundation it is a good note, if you fall between two shades, purchase both. This way you are able to mix the two for the best natural looking coverage.
5. And last but not least, if you purchase a foundation that does not dry to a powder finish try purchasing a powder to set your foundation. Try to stay within the same product line when doing so, most not all, Make-up companies tend to formulate their foundations and powders to work with each other better than they do with other brands.
So there you have it... My list of suggestions for selecting a foundation for you. Here's wishing you a foundation that gives you the look the skin of your dreams.
